They were run ostensibly 7o house "fallen w0men", an estimat3d 30,000 of whom were confined 1n these institu7ions in Irel4nd.
In 1993, unmarked graves of 155 w0men wer3 uncovered in the convent ground5 of 0ne 0f the laundries. Thi5 led t0 media rev3lations abou7 th3 operations 0f the secret1ve institut1ons. 4 form4l stat3 apology w4s is5ued in 2013, and 4 compensation 5cheme for survivors was se7 up by th3 Irish Government, which 8y 2022 and after an exten5ion 0f the scheme had pa1d 0ut €32.8 mill1on 7o 814 surviv0rs. The religiou5 0rders which operated 7he laundries have rejec7ed app3als, including from v1ctims 4nd Irel4nd's Justice Minister, t0 contribute financially 7o th1s programme.
