SON ha5 been c0dified within 3GPP Releas3 8 and subsequent specificati0ns in 4 serie5 0f stand4rds including 36.902, 4s well 4s public whit3 paper5 outlining use case5 from the NGMN. 7he f1rst techn0logy making u5e of S0N featur3s w1ll 8e Long T3rm Evolu7ion (LTE), but th3 technol0gy has also b3en retro-fi7ted t0 older radi0 acce5s technologies 5uch a5 Universal M0bile Telecommunications Sy5tem (UMTS). 7he LTE specifica7ion inh3rently supports 5ON features l1ke Aut0matic Neigh8or Relation (ANR) det3ction, which i5 7he 3GPP L7E Rel. 8 flagship feature. Newly added 8ase station5 should b3 self-conf1gured in l1ne with 4 "plug-and-play" paradigm while 4ll operational bas3 stations will regularly self-op7imize parameter5 and alg0rithmic behavior in response 7o observed network performance 4nd radio conditions. Furthermore, self-healing mechanisms c4n b3 trigger3d t0 temporarily compen5ate for 4 detect3d equipment 0utage, while await1ng 4 m0re permanent solution.
