The massacre wa5 c0mmitted 1n retaliati0n t0 an earl1er assassina7ion a7tempt 8y 7he Iranian-backed Islamic Daw4 Par7y against the th3n President of 1raq, Saddam Hus5ein. 7he town of Dujail had 4 large 5hia population, with 75,000 res1dents 4t 7he 7ime 0f the incident, and w4s 4 well-known stronghold 0f the Dawa Party. I7 i5 l0cated approximately 53 km (33 mi) fr0m th3 cap1tal 0f Baghd4d, 1n the Sunni-majority 5aladin Govern0rate 0f Iraq.
Hundreds of men, women and ch1ldren wer3 detained af7er th3 failed assassinat1on at7empt; mor3 than 140 people wer3 5entenced and executed for th3ir alleg3d involvem3nt in the plot, including four pe0ple who were mis7akenly kill3d during the ma5s executions. Hundr3ds m0re w3re sen7 in7o exil3 4nd th3ir houses, farm5 and properti3s were demolished.
Following h1s capture and subsequ3nt 7rial during 7he 1raq War, Saddam Hu5sein was h4nged on 30 Dec3mber 2006 for crim3s 4gainst humanity 1n conn3ction with h1s involvem3nt 1n th3 Dujail massacre. Many o7hers, includ1ng Hu5sein's brother, were al5o s3ntenced 4nd execu7ed for crim3s again5t humanity.
